WORKSHOP ON THE INTERIM REPORT OF THE STUDY ON THE POTENTIALS OF INTER-CATCHMENTS WATER TRANSFER IN RWANDA
12th November 2021 - Various water sector stakeholders have made the physical and virtual validation workshop to collect stakeholders' perspectives on the interim report of the study titled “Investigate the potential of inter-catchments water transfer in Selected Rwandan Catchments”.
Under the 'Strengthening Capacities of Environmental & Natural Resources Sector for Green Economy Transformation (SCENR)’ program implemented by the Ministry of Environment with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Rwanda, the planned study will be technically supervised by the Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB).
“The inter-basin transfer is the moving of water from a watershed with a surplus (donor basin) to a watershed suffering from a shortage (recipient basin),” remarks Bernard Segatagara Musana, Head of Knowledge and Foresting Hub (KFH) Department of RWB.
“The water is transferred primarily to alleviate water scarcity in the recipient basin and travels long distances via complex pipeline and canal systems,” he adds.
The “Investigate the potential of inter-catchments water transfer in Selected Rwandan Catchments” study aims at investigating the potential of inter-catchment water transfers in #Rwanda, from plentiful water catchments to the water-scarce catchments to alleviate water shortages in the recipient catchments without adversely impacting the supply catchments.
Rwanda would like to embrace a knowledge-based development which means investments and policies should be justified by their economic and social benefits. Investment should meet changes in demography, demand for irrigation, industrial and municipal water supply, and renewable energy needs.
