THE FIRST STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING AND INCEPTION WORKSHOP FOR THE MUVUMBA MULTIPURPOSE WATER RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
17th February 2022, Kigali: The Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB), along with various public and private partners, has held the first Steering Committee (SC) meeting and inception workshop for the Muvumba Multipurpose Water Resources Development Program (MMWRDP).
The DirectorGeneral of RWB, Prime Ngabonziza, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment (MoE), Patrick Karera, the Representative of the Africa Development Bank (AfDB), Amandine Umukosha, the Mayor of Nyagatare District, Stephen Gasana, members of the Steering Committee (SC) and Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), consultants, and various partners were all present.
The objectives were to seek the appropriate strategic guidance on the whole program from members of the Steering Committee (SC) and review the inception report of Muvumba Irrigation System Design for MMWRDP.
The first phase of the program intends to construct a dam of 30.5 meters high and impound 35 million cubic meters of water in Karama, Gatunda, and Rukomo Sectors in Nyagatare District. The dam will serve for domestic water supply, irrigation of 7,380 ha, livestock watering, production of hydropower, and flood control.
The Government of Rwanda has received financing from the African Development Bank towards the cost of MMWRDP which is being implemented in Nyagatare District through RWB.
