The 4th Muvumba Program Steering Committee gathers in Nyagatare
19th December 2023: The Muvumba Program Steering Committee convened its fourth meeting, marking the first occurrence of such a gathering in the Nyagatare District, with the primary objective of gaining a comprehensive understanding of the site conditions.
Prior to the committee meeting, members, along with the Technical Advisory Committee, conducted a field visit to the dam site to evaluate progress and identify challenges.
In his Opening Remarks, the Chairperson of the Program Steering Committee, Patrick Karera, extended a warm welcome to the participants. He emphasized the various components of the program, underscored the significance of the project for Nyagatare district, and urged full support from the attendees.
Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Environment, Patrick Karera, also directed a request to the contractor (SINOHYDRO) and the supervisor (KECC & HOLISTIC Consulting Center), both present at the meeting, urging them to exert diligence and ensure timely completion of the project.
Throughout the meeting, the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources assured participants that they are actively mobilizing the necessary funds for the irrigation scheme. Additionally, WASAC reported ongoing negotiations with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to secure support for the implementation of the water supply scheme.
Muvumba Multipurpose Water Resources Development Program will construct a dam that impounds 55 million m3 of water.
The water will be used for irrigation of 9,640 ha, livestock watering, supply 50,000 m3/day water for domestic water use, and a 1MW hydropower plant.
