RWB’S DG VISITS THE NEWLY CONSTRUCTED SEBEYA LATERAL DYKE
25th November 2021 - The Director-General of the Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB), Prime Ngabonziza, has paid a one-day visit to the newly constructed Sebeya lateral dyke in Rubavu District, Western Province.
The dyke serves as the flood mitigation and protection structure on the Sebeya river to store part of the flood volume and have it released later at a lower flow rate.
It also generates a dampening effect on the flood, by reducing and delaying the peak flood downstream especially reducing floods affecting Mahoko center and other households nearby the Sebeya river.
However, the new retention structure would have an effect on floods generated on Sebeya upstream catchment, and floods generated on Karambo catchment.
The construction of the new dyke is part of the ongoing 'Embedding Integrated Water Resource Management in Rwanda (EWMR)' Project funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Rwanda.
During this field visit, the Director-General has also assessed the construction underway of the Sebeya dyke in Musabike area.
