RWB Takes Action to Mitigate Meandering Hazards along Sebeya River

11th July 2023: The Director General of the Rwanda Water Resources Board Director (RWB) Dr. Emmanuel Rukundo, and the technical team met with Rubavu District Mayor in a field visit to assess the flood hotspots along Sebeya river.

They visited various parts along the river in Kanama, Nyundo and Rugerero Sectors in Rubavu District.

This technical assessment focused on mapping the high risk zone areas, as a move to mitigate and prevent future hazardous floods caused by the Sebeya river.

Several flood hotspots, which need to be covered by building retaining walls to avoid overflow into neighborhoods, were identified.

However, various initiatives actions were taken to curb the river’s floods such as the retaining walls, Sebeya lateral dykes, Bukeri diversion channel and the new Sebeya retention dam which aims to regulate the flow of water and reduce the risk of floods affecting Mahoko center and other households nearby the Sebeya river.

These are through the Embedding Integrated Water Resources Management Programme (EWRM), funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN), and implemented by the Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB).
