RWB , CHINA GEO ENGENEERING CORPORATION DISCUSS THE PROGRESS OF MUHAZI DYKE PROJECT

17th May 2021 - The Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB) technical team conducted a field visit to assess the progress of the Muhazi Dyke Project.

The technical team has also met with China Geo Engeneering Corporation, which has been contracted to build the new dyke that will replace the existing one.

“The current unprotected dyke breaks and has the potential to flood Nyabugogo, a commercial hub in Kigali town, causing significant property and life damage.” Davis Bugingo, RWB's Flood Management and Water Storage Development Division Manager, explains the importance of the new dyke in combating such issues.

The new Muhazi dyke will be 6.5m high with crest elevation of 1437.5 m where it's anticipated to be completed in September 2021.

Muhazi Lake is fed by an 870 km2 watershed and spans approximately 38 kilometers before being drained by the Nyabugogo River. The current old dyke was built as an emergency solution in 1999, but the lake was drying up due to an uncontrolled outlet.

The construction of the new Muhazi dyke is expected to cost more than Rwf 3 billion, with completion scheduled for September 2021.
