RWB Acquires Modern Laboratory and Real-Time Monitoring Equipment for Cleaner Water

The Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB) has officially received a new package of modern laboratory and field monitoring equipment from the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) to enhance the country’s water quality monitoring and management capacity.

The equipment, valued at USD 139,000, includes advanced laboratory instruments, field test kits, ICT tools, and four real-time water quality sensors installed in the Akagera and Akanyaru Rivers. These sensors will provide continuous data on key parameters such as temperature, conductivity, turbidity, and other water quality indicators — enabling RWB to monitor pollution trends and take timely, evidence-based decisions.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Eng. Richard Nyirishema, Executive Chairperson of RWB, commended NBI’s support, noting that the equipment represents a major step forward in the country’s efforts to safeguard water resources.

“This equipment will strengthen RWB’s ability to produce precise water quality data, which is essential for informed decision-making and the sustainable management of Rwanda’s water resources,” said Eng. Nyirishema.

The Executive Director of the Nile Basin Initiative, Dr. Frolence Adongo, emphasized the importance of addressing pollution in shared water resources, underlining that clean water is the foundation of health and development.

“Pollution is one of the biggest threats to water resources in the Basin. Water that is not fit for its intended purpose, even while you may see it, is not available. It is my hope that this laboratory will help Rwanda Water Resources Board integrate water quality monitoring into decision-making for social and economic development,” said Eng. Adongo.

This support aligns with RWB’s mission to ensure the sustainable management and protection of Rwanda’s water resources. By integrating real-time monitoring and advanced laboratory analysis, RWB will be better positioned to detect pollution sources, support environmental compliance, and guide policy formulation for water safety and ecosystem protection.
