Rwanda Water Resources Board Participates in Umuganda to Kick Off 2024 Environment Week
Rwanda Water Resources Board management and staff participated in the monthly community work (Umuganda) to mark the kick-off of the 2024 Environment Week.
The Community work took place at hills surrounding Mwogo and Mbirurume rivers which form the Nyabarongo River, bringing together citizens from Nyamabage, Ruhango and Karongi Districts.
Rwanda Water Resources Board staff joined citizens and other institutions to create progressive terraces to fight against river erosion and pollution.
Minister of Environment, Dr. Mujawamariya Jean D’Arc highlighted that land degradation, caused by erosion, deforestation, and unsustainable mining, significantly contributes to river pollution. She stressed the need for collective efforts to restore degraded land and ecosystems.
Rwanda will join the world in marking World Environment Day on June 5, under the theme: Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience. The Environment Week launch at Nyamagabe, Ruhango, and Karongi districts underscores the importance of protecting the Nile's sources from pollution by restoring degraded land.
