AFDB evaluates the implementation progress of MMWRDP

The African Development Bank team conducted an evaluation of the progress of the Muvumba Multipurpose Water Resources Program, which is being implemented by the Rwanda Water Resources Board.

On 22nd November 2023, the Director-General of the Rwanda Water Resources Board, Dr. Emmanuel Rukundo, chaired a meeting that covered numerous subjects, including implementation progress, financial management, procurement, as well as gender.

The following day, the AFDB Environmental and Social Safeguards Consultant, Winnie Wairimu, met with the members of the Grievance Redress Committees for the Muvumba Multipurpose Water Development program in Nyagatare District. The members explained the election process and how they are assisting community members in resolving issues related to expropriation associated with the project. Winnie Wairimu commended the members for their dedication and urged them to serve the community wholeheartedly.

On Friday, 24th November 2023, the AFDB team visited the Muvumba Multipurpose Dam site to evaluate the progress in implementing the Muvumba Multipurpose Water Resources Program.

The visit specifically focused on assessing environmental and social issues. The AFDB team urged the contractor to prioritize the safety of the community and uphold gender equality during recruitment, with a particular emphasis on prioritizing the Project Affected Persons (PAPs).

The Muvumba Multipurpose Water Resources Development Project is financed by AFDB in partnership with the government of Rwanda and is being implemented by the Rwanda Water Resources Board.

This project involves the construction of a multipurpose dam with storage capacity of 55 m3, hydropower plant, irrigation scheme as well as domestic water supply.
