3oth December 2022: As the year 2022 draws to a close, we're sharing our 34 media stories that highlighted various water resources management activities implemented by the Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB) and its stakeholders in the water sector.

TOP AFRICA NEWS named its Best 2022 Sources of Green information in Rwanda  (Top Africa News on 22 December 2022) In 2022, TOP AFRICA NEWS has benefited a lot from Rwanda’s Ministry of Environment through its line agencies such as Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), the Rwanda Forestry Authority (RFA) and the Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB) which is affiliated to the Prime Minister’s Office.  Read more

Installing boreholes to improve rural communities' resilience to drought   (The New Times on 31 October 2022)  To cope with the current dry spell, the Rwanda Water Resources Board has recommended the installation of boreholes across the country so as to avail water for small-scale irrigation and livestockBernard Musana, the Head of the Knowledge and Forecasting Hub Department at Rwanda Water Resources Board told Doing Business that more than 200 sites with enough groundwater that can help to establish boreholes were identified in the Eastern and Southern provinces which are hit by dry spells.  Read more

Experts weigh in on soil erosion-induced losses   (The New Times on 10 August 2022) Soil conservation, restoration and erosion control experts have suggested the establishment of demonstration plots in villages across the country that could help educate farmers on controlling soil erosion, starting with districts that are most vulnerable. Pamela Ruzigana, the Catchments Restoration and Erosion Control Division Manager at the Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB) told The New Times that the top causes of soil erosion include deforestation and vegetation clearance. “Besides deforestation, the soil is not covered by any vegetation in some areas. Read More

How soil erosion is posing a threat on food security  (The New Times on 10 August 2022) In the last three farming seasons (over a year’s time), farmers grouped under IABM – a cooperative mainly growing maize in Muhanga District, Southern Province, saw 28 hectares of their farms gradually washed away by torrential rain induced erosion, causing them at least Rwf112 million annual income loss.  Read More

EDITORIAL: We must act now to save our soils   (The New Times on 10 August 2022) A new damning report has revealed that Rwanda loses some 27 million tonnes of topsoil each year thanks to soil erosion, resulting in an annual loss of Rwf800 billion. Indeed, according to the State of Soil Erosion Control in Rwanda May 2022, more than 745,000 hectares of agricultural land in Rwanda are potentially eroded every year.It was produced by the Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).   Read More

Rwanda loses over Rwf800bn annually due to soil erosion –new report   (The New Times on 9 August 2022) MORE THAN 745,000 hectares of agricultural land in Rwanda potentially loses its topsoil every year, a new report shows, adding that the country loses more than Rwf800 billion annually due to soil erosion. The contour bank terraces are recommended in high-risk agricultural lands, ditches are recommended in forested areas while bench terraces are recommended in areas at extremely high risk where bench terracing was started but wasn’t done in the entire area.Grassed waterways have been recommended for existing terraces which were made without waterways or with waterways but no grasses.  Read more

RWB, IUCN Rwanda release findings on the State of Soil Erosion Control in Rwanda   (Top Africa News on 9 August 2022) The State of Soil Erosion Control in Rwanda is the result of collaborative efforts between the Government of Rwanda through Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as part of the Embedding Integrated Water Resources Management in Rwanda project, funded by the Embassy of Kingdom of the Netherlands in Rwanda. Rwf3bn dyke on Lake Muhazi to enhance tourism, agriculture   (The New Times on 1 August 2022) Works to construct dykes worth Rwf3 billion for conserving Lake Muhazi and protecting its downstream area from devastating floods are complete, according to the Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB). The barrage was built to control the outflow of the water from the lake so as to, among others, permit sustainable food production around the lake, ensure sustainable water supply for agriculture and domestic use in addition ramping up a growing fisheries sector.  Read more

Rwanda set to roll out ‘flood sensors’ to mitigate disasters  (The New Times on 18 July 2022) Installing flood sensors (detectors of water levels) on rivers, drainages, and lakes, is among the investments that Rwanda is making to manage and control the effects of storm water- surface water in abnormal quantities resulting from heavy falls of rain that result in floods. The Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB) is targeting areas where storm water converges to cause floods. We have identified catchments such as those of Rwandex, Rugunga, Gikondo, Kinamba, Nyabugogo, Nyamirambo and others. Read more

1,500 businesses risking prison, penalties over water permits   (The New Times on 11 July 2022) Vital Munyandinda, the Water Use Permits Division Manager at Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB), said that water resources are under increasing pressure, emphasizing the need for using them efficiently and effectively so as to ensure sustainable use for future generations. He said that according to the 2018 water use law (Article 36), “any person who uses water or carries out a water related activity without a water use permit as required, commits an offense.” Read More

Who is polluting River Nyabarongo?   (The New Times on 9 June 2022) Environmental experts have recommended thorough investigation into why Nyabarongo River continues to be polluted despite billions of monies that have been invested in its conservation and protection. Remy Norbert Duhuze, The Water Monitoring and Quality Control Division Manager at Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB), reaffirmed that soil erosion and mining activities are on top of Nyabarongo River polluters.“From our assessments, we have found that Nyabarongo pollution is mainly caused by soil erosion from its catchment. Masaka wetland to be turned into an ecotourism lake   (The New Times on 23 March 2022) Feasibility studies are ongoing to pave the way for the development of Masaka wetland into an ecotourism lake and help contain its floodingRemy Norbert Duhuze, the Water Monitoring and Quality Control Division Manager at Rwanda Water Resources (RWB), said feasibility on a dyke meant to prevent flooding of the wetland has been completed. He added that the construction of the dyke around the wetland, according to engineers, is needed in order to contain the water before transforming the wetland into a lake to pave way for recreational activities.  Read more

Rwanda joins the world to mark the World Water Day 2022   (Top Africa News on 22 March, 2022) Today, Rwanda joined the rest of the world to mark World Water Day which is celebrated on 22nd March of each year.
