Muvumba Multipurpose Water Resources Development Program
Muvumba Multipurpose Water Resources Development Program (Additional Financing for Irrigation Project)
The Government of Rwanda (GoR) has been implementing the Muvumba Multipurpose Water Resources Development Program (MMWRDP), with financing from the African Development Bank (AfDB). The objective of the program is to improve water, energy, food and nutrition security by harnessing water resources for irrigation, domestic, livestock use and hydropower generation, while ensuring sustainability of the resources and building resilience against climate change and variability. The first major component under the program is an ongoing 39m high dam that impounds 55 million cubic meter of water in Karama, Gatunda and Rukomo sectors.
The GoR seeks additional financing for an Irrigation Project to enhance agricultural productivity in the drought-prone Nyagatare District, Eastern Province of Rwanda. The project objective is to improve food and nutrition security by developing an irrigation system covering a command area of approximately 3,073 hectares, spanning the sectors of Nyagatare, Karama, Tabagwe, Rwempasha, and Rukomo. Project outcomes will include sustainable and climate resilient crop production and increased productivity on 3,073 ha of irrigated agricultural land in Nyagatare District, leading to improved food security and nutrition; improved and sustainable farmer incomes; and improved skills of WUAs (Water Users Association) members, cooperatives and youth-led organizations in the operation, management and maintenance of irrigation scheme. The irrigation project is located downstream of the Muvumba Multipurpose Dam, which serves as the main water source for the irrigation system.
