Volcanoes Community Resilience Project (VCRP)

The Government of Rwanda with the support from the World Bank, is implementing the Volcanoes Community Resilience Project (VCRP) through a consortium of national institutions, including the Rwanda Water Resources Board, Rwanda Development Board, Rwanda Environment Management Authority and Rwanda Meteorology Agency, under the overall coordination of the Ministry of Environment.

The project aims to enhance climate resilience, mitigate flood risks, strengthen watershed management, and improve the livelihoods of communities within the targeted region. Key investments will focus on flood risk reduction, ecological and catchment restoration, and sustainable livelihood development.

Spanning a five-year implementation period from January 2024 to December 2028, the project requires an estimated USD 300 million in financing. Funding is expected from multiple development partners, including the World Bank (WB), European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The Rwanda Water Resources Board as one of the implementing partners is leading the landscape restoration, catchment management and flood risk reduction investments related activities.
